It worked!

 

Alex Malarkey got a newer FES (functional electrical stimulation) cycle. The MyoCycle is super easy to set up and use.

For Alex, the challenge he faced was that his power wheelchair sits very high, and has custom seating. With those two features, we could not get Alex’s feet to reach the pedals.

As with a lot of things with Alex, we had to take what we had and tweak it a bit to work for him.

So….i kept him in his overhead sling, tucked some things next to his torso inside the sling to support him better, a wedge thingy do behind his back, a recliner, and some ties to hold his arms. 

It worked!

Alex loves moving and working hard. On the bike, Alex can feel his legs, and last night’s ride he felt his feet. How cool is that? 

The bike stims his muscles while the pedals move. I can place electrodes in multiple places at the same time. Right now, I just have the electrodes on his quads. I am trying to get the ones for his hamstrings placed just right so the connector can reach them. We will figure it out 😊

Alex says the feeling afterwards is so good. Getting the blood pumping makes a lot function better (like the digestive system) and just feel better. 

Alex is determined to recover and stay healthy.
