The “Don’t Spill the Beans” Principle: What Stability Really Means
I often describe Alex’s physiology using the children’s game “Don’t Spill the Beans.”
In the game, beans are carefully balanced inside a container.
One bean may not seem significant.
But eventually enough movement occurs that the entire container tips and everything spills.
Alex’s physiology can sometimes function in a similar way.
His stability is not the absence of complexity.
His stability is the result of many variables remaining in balance….a homeostatic balance.
Routine.
Sleep.
Respiratory support.
Positioning…and movement..lots of movement.
Communication.
Equipment.
Caregiver familiarity.
Autonomic regulation.
Environmental predictability.
Each may seem small when viewed independently.
Together they create stability.
When enough variables shift simultaneously, the body’s ability to maintain balance may become challenged.
The result is not always immediate.
Sometimes it develops gradually.
But once enough “beans” have moved, the entire system may react.
This is one reason continuity and consistency have been so important throughout Alex’s life.
At the same time, continuity is often misunderstood. It is not about keeping everything exactly the same forever or avoiding change. Life changes. People travel, grow, learn, and encounter new environments. Continuity is not tied to a specific place, routine, or set of circumstances. Instead, it is something we carry with us wherever we go.
For Alex, continuity means preserving the core elements that support stability, even when the setting changes. Familiar communication, trusted caregivers, reliable equipment, predictable responses, and an understanding of how his body functions can travel with him. The goal is not perfection. The goal is maintaining enough of the system’s balance that new experiences do not require the body to adapt to everything at once.
The more predictable the environment, the less the body must constantly adapt.
For individuals with significant autonomic involvement, reducing unnecessary physiologic stress may contribute directly to long-term stability and wellness.
In this sense, stability is not simply the absence of problems.
It is the successful maintenance of balance within a highly complex system.
