This blog is about lessons learned, wisdom gained, observations made through over 21 years of walking by faith a journey filled with the pain of great adversity but the richness of God’s grace.
My favorite phrase which has become so apparent on this journey….But God!
Just Say Hi
Just Say Hi
One of Alex’s teachers from the high school in 2016, Mrs. Moorhouse, thought that doing an interview with him before he graduated might be helpful for other students who were not as familiar with him.
When someone first sees a person in a large power wheelchair like the one Alex drives, especially with all the equipment he has on it, one of the first questions they may wonder is, “Can he talk?”
I think Mrs. Moorhouse did a fantastic job interviewing Alex.
In the video, you will notice a wagon parked behind him. That is the wagon I pulled around the school each day to carry his emergency bag, book bags, and other things he needed.
You may also notice that, in the first part of the interview, Alex is wearing a different shirt than he is in the second part. There is a reason for that.
The first time Mrs. Moorhouse tried to interview Alex, he was not having a good day. It turned out that a strong weather front was coming through, and those can really mess with his autonomic system and his thinking.
She tried again another day, and he did great. He was clear, talkative, and very much himself.
This video was shown at the school one week before Alex had an accident there, when his wheelchair tipped over sideways. It was a scary event, but fortunately, and unbelievably, Alex only needed 15 stitches.
I hope this video helps educate others, even just a little, about individuals whose situations may look different from their own.
Go ahead and just say hi.
You never know what friendship you may strike up.
