The Jogging Chair is Here!!!

Alex’s "jogging chair" arrived yesterday. My friend Wendy put the chair together. She is so gifted at mechanical things:) After it was together, we put Alex in it to start seeing what cushions may be needed and/or adjustments may need to be done. Alex actually looked great! I need to get just a few "smooshie" pillows and he should be set! Lucy(the doggie) should be able to ride with Alex too:)

The goal is for Alex to be able to ride in the jogger without the ventilator and only use his diaphragm pacer. It might take a bit of time to get there. We will go at the pace that Alex determines. If he would need to still use his vent, we will figure it out with the help of some brillantly-minded individuals that have helped us with other "tweeking" that needed done.

Yesterday, after Wendy and I set Alex up in the jogger, I took a very quick jont down the driveway. It was starting to rain so we could not go far, but it worked!!! Alex will have to build up his tolerance, as will I, but this is such a cool opportunity!!

I would encourage others that may be in a wheelchair themselves, or have a loved one in a wheelchair, to examine this possibility. You can also find someone to be their feet for which is the idea behind Ainsley's Angels.

Alex  has a lot of endurance now, and even drove a mile at the school track the other night. I know he could do a 5K by driving his chair himself, but unfortunately, we need his chair to hold up. So until a power chair is invented that is specifically designed to race or go longer distances, Alex will ride and someone else will be his feet. This jogger is a way to let Alex experience going a longer distance, and to get to experience doing runs with others. What a great opportunity!
